DOCUMENTARY

LOGLINE: A group of students were gathered to compare and contrast what they had in common in terms of speaking multiple languages.

Our first documentary while completing 2nd year at Griffith College. I was only 2nd year from this group who made the film. Everyone else were 1st years. Our director had this idea to interview people who moved to Ireland in terms of education and if language barriers were a concern when deciding to move abroad.

My role in this documentary was the sound engineer. As I’m aware with the beginner levels of working with ZOOM system equipment, I thought I was volunteer to take on this role and let the aspiring 1st years have most of the creative freedom for their first ever film.

The majority of our contributors were fellow film students and were very kind to help us bring our idea to life. The goal was the have most of the students in a room and to find out how many of them spoke more than 1 language. We would then have multiple cut aways to some of the students performing their day to day activities getting a deeper insight into their life here in Dublin.

Sound really only played a big part when it came to the interviews and footage filmed in the studio. An unfortunate shift made us only available using a boom mic with my ZOOM H5 recorder. But I feel the sound quality really brought out a great sense of realism and naturalism to the documentary.

In the end, my favourite section from this film would be when the students showed or said something from their own country. That really brought a sense of diversity and cooperation in relation to a multi-diverse college celebration different cultures and uniting us as a community.
